Can My Wart be treated at Home?
While most individuals with plantar warts can use in-home treatment methods, you should not endeavor to care for these viral growths without the guidance of a medical professional if you suffer from diabetes. If you find one while performing your daily foot inspection, you should cover the wart with a clean bandage. This prevents the virus from spreading to other parts of your body. Wash your hands thoroughly and contact us immediately to make an appointment.
If you do not suffer from an illness similar to diabetes (which affects your autoimmune system) you are free to try home treatment practices if you so desire. There are many over-the-counter (OTC) kits on the market. They can be found in most pharmacies and retail stores. The most common forms of OTC at-home treatments use salicylic acid to attack the wart. You should take extra precautions to avoid exposing the healthy skin to salicylic acid as it can lead to complications. Also, beware of inhaling the fumes of the acid. You should work in a well ventilated area.
It is, however, worth noting that research shows that OTC at-home treatments do not yield significantly better results than simply waiting for warts to go away on their own. In most cases, the process can take several months, if not years, all the while growing and spreading. If your wart is causing you pain, discomfort, or embarrassment and you are looking for a more speedy treatment, you should make an appointment today.
